After nearly 20 years of planning, the National Museum of Industrial History opened in Bethlehem Pennsylvania this week. The long-delayed industrial museum, housed in the century-old former Bethlehem Steel plant, was finally opened for visitors wishing to experience the showcase of American industrial might. After about 140 years of metal production, the plant's blast furnaces went cold in 1995. Located on the banks of the Lehigh River, Bethlehem was responsible for manufacturing the Golden Gate Bridge's legendary beams, the Rockefeller Plaza skeleton and armor plates for countless American warships. "Where better to showcase this history than where it happened?" said museum director Rusty Baker, speaking of the museum's poignant locale, adding "It really puts it into context." http://host...

Dr. Naomi F. Miller and Dr. Richard L. Zettler February 15, 2012 One of the most important projects ever sponsored by the Penn Museum was the joint expedition to Ur, Iraq. Symbols of plants and animals were found among the many ornaments of gold, carnelian and lapis in the Royal Cemetery, especially in the tomb of Queen Puabi. Fertility and abundance, important themes of later ancient Mesopotamian texts, are clearly in evidence even before those narratives were written down. Close examination of this 70-year old museum display was key to new interpretations.
http://www.ibiology.org/ibioseminars/richard-amasino-part-1.html Talk Overview: Plants flower in response to changes in environmental cues such as day length (photoperiodism) and temperature. Amasino explains that Arabidopsis thaliana, a common model plant, typically flowers in response to long days. There are, however, a number of mutants that either flower when days are short or don’t flower when days are long. These mutants have allowed scientists to identify a key regulator of flowering called CONSTANS. When CONSTANS is expressed in the presence of light, it triggers a cascade of protein expression and migration that ultimately results in flower formation. In his second talk, Amasino explains that some plants germinate and begin growing in the fall but do not flower and produce se...
Paul Moser, superintendent of Steam Services, Office of Physical Plant, gives a tour of Penn State University’s steam plants at University Park. The East and West Campus steam plants provide combined heat and power for the University’s 200+ buildings. The steam is distributed to these buildings via a network of 17 miles of underground piping. University Park has a West Campus Steam Plant (WCSP), built in 1929, that provides primary steam production. Its East Campus Steam Plant (ECSP), built in 1972, serves peak steam demands. PCN documented these tours, which can be taken at UP, in this video.

Between 1880 and 1930, hundreds of thousands of eastern European immigrants settled in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The Extraordinary Journey presents the stories of where they came from, why they left the "Old Country", how they got to America, the life they created in the anthracite coal country after they arrived, and their extraordinary ethnic legacy forged from that which they cherished most - family, faith, and freedom. The memory of their time has come to define the lives of many Americans today. The three-episode documentary contains dozens of insightful interviews with Polish, Slovak, Ukrainian, Lithuanian, and Hungarian immigrants, their children, and scholars of this period in American history. These funny, tragic, and deeply intimate memories are visualized by hundreds of archiv...
